Running Yoast and Rank Math at the same time? Here's what it breaks
February 16, 2027
It happens more often than you would think: a site gets redesigned, a new developer takes over, or a theme change brings its own SEO settings along, and two SEO plugins end up active on the same WordPress install without anyone deciding that on purpose.
How a site ends up with two
Yoast SEO and Rank Math are the two most installed SEO plugins on WordPress.org, with Yoast past 10 million active installs and Rank Math past 4 million. Both are common enough on their own that a site passing through a few hands over the years has good odds of picking up one, then the other, without the first ever being removed.
What actually breaks
Rank Math's own migration documentation is blunt about it: running two SEO plugins at once creates conflicts in meta tag output, sitemap generation, and schema markup, and the plugin highly discourages doing it. In practice that means two competing XML sitemaps, two sets of JSON-LD on the same page, or a meta description one plugin wrote getting silently overwritten by the other every time a page saves.
How to check your own site
A few signs give it away fast:
- Two plugins both showing Active under Plugins, with SEO in the name
- More than one meta description tag in your homepage's page source
- More than one JSON-LD schema block on the same page
- An XML sitemap reachable at two different plugin-generated URLs
Picking one and cleaning up
Keep whichever plugin you are actually configuring, confirm its settings and meta fields look right on a few key pages, then deactivate the other rather than just leaving it dormant. A deactivated SEO plugin can still leave old sitemap files and cached data behind, so re-save your permalinks afterward to regenerate a clean sitemap.
Quick answers
Which plugin should I keep, Yoast or Rank Math?
Whichever one currently holds your real settings and the meta fields you want live. Both work equally well with a WordPress connector's writeback for titles, descriptions, and JSON-LD.
Will deactivating one plugin delete my existing SEO data?
Deactivating stops it from outputting tags but does not usually delete its saved settings. Check before you also delete the plugin, since that step can remove its data for good.
