Google AI Overviews: what a small business site can actually do
November 24, 2026
AI Overviews now sit above the classic results on a large share of Google searches, and they are already reshaping how much traffic the number one result gets. You cannot buy your way into one, but you are not powerless either: the same levers that earn a featured snippet still apply, plus a couple that are new.
The traffic reality, in one number
Ahrefs tracked this directly. Analyzing 300,000 keywords in December 2025, it found that when an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate to the top-ranking organic result drops by 58%, up sharply from a 34.5% drop it measured back in April 2025. Fewer people click through at all; the ones who do are further down the funnel.
Google's own position
Google has been explicit that it still wants you to be found. From its own Search blog: "We continue to send billions of clicks to the web every day and are committed to prioritizing the web in our AI experiences in Search." AI Overviews are built from the same underlying ranking systems as regular search, not a separate track you need a new strategy for from scratch.
What moves the needle
- Be eligible to rank normally first. AI Overviews draw from pages that already satisfy Google's standard ranking signals; a page invisible in classic search is invisible here too.
- Answer the question in one direct sentence near the top of the relevant section, then expand. The same Princeton-led GEO study referenced above found that adding citations and direct, source-backed statements raised a page's odds of being pulled into a generative answer by up to 40%.
- Use FAQ and HowTo structure for genuinely matching content; it is still the easiest way to hand Google a ready-made, liftable answer.
- Keep the page worth clicking beyond the summary: specifics, local detail, pricing, examples an overview will not reproduce.
Quick answers
Can I opt my site out of AI Overviews?
There is no separate opt-out; AI Overviews draw from the same index as regular Search. Blocking Google's crawler would remove you from both.
Do I need different content for AI Overviews than for normal SEO?
No separate content track is required. The same fundamentals, crawlable pages, clear structure, direct answers backed by real detail, feed both regular rankings and AI Overviews.
